When I build a walk-in closet for a client, I first sit down with them to see what they’re storing in the space. It doesn’t do a lot of good to use a generic design; this is why builders-grade closets often become overwhelmed with clutter. Rather than decide on an arbitrary number of shelves or a certain length of hanging rods, it’s more helpful to consider what you tend to wear (and therefore store).

If you are sharing the closet with a partner, you’ll need to have room for each of your belongings. If one of you wears separates and the other wears long suits or dresses, arranging the hanging rods differently on each side of the closet may make the most sense. Similarly, if you wear a lot of t-shirts and jeans, adding drawer or shelf space might be more of a priority than more hanging space.

This also applies to accessories. Those with large shoe collections will need a different type of storage than those who have five or six pairs of shoes. If you have a lot of valuable jewelry, you may want a jewelry tray; if you don’t wear jewelry much at all, this will probably not be something you'll want to spend the space on.

Arrange Items by Category and Color

Once you have your organizers installed, place everything in the closet by category. This means jeans should be stored with jeans, blouses with blouses, and ties with ties. This will make it simple to go to the right part of the closet to find the appropriate clothing for that day.

Within each category, arrange your items by color. This is often the easiest way to hone in on the precise shirt or skirt you want; you already know it’s red or black or gray, so all you need to do is go to that color block of the correct category, and there it is. You could do this in the ROY G BIV (rainbow) order, or you might prefer to line up your clothing from lightest to darkest. Keep Everyday Essentials Accessible

Another factor to consider when putting your items away is how often you use them. This goes for accessories, too. Put the shoes you wear a few times per week in the front or middle of your shoe organizers, while the dancing shoes and those you wear to work in the garden a few times per year can safely be stored along the edges or back.

Install Good Lighting

All of the organization in the world won’t help you if you can’t see everything in your closet. Your space might have come with one overhead light, which is fine to see the basics, but if you have a lot of drawers, corner shelves, and accessories, you’ll need more light than this.

LED strips are one of my favorite tricks to keep even the darkest recesses of the closet bright. Just attach them under shelves or even inside of deep drawers to make it easy to see what you need to.

Another good option is to consider smart lighting based on the time of day. You could put on bright lights in the morning when you need to be sure you’re choosing black shoes and not navy, then have dimmer lights turn on in the evening when you’re putting items away and winding down for the night.

Add Appealing Extras

Finally, keep in mind that the closet I install for you doesn’t have to be your final design. Spruce up your space as your tastes change; add a gorgeous rug, some inspiring artwork, or even some aromatherapy.

You might also decide to spotlight some of your most treasured wardrobe items. If you have several designer purses, for instance, you might want to put them in glass-front cabinets with lighting. This will keep them dust-free and also make you smile every day when you see them. Having an appealing closet space will inspire you to want to maintain it and keep it organized.

In Ohio, we have many older homes that don’t have a lot of closet space. When my clients call for a custom closet without appropriate closet space, there’s quite a bit we can do for them! Contrary to popular belief, you don’t actually need to have a walk-in closet or even a reach-in closet in order to make plenty of room for clothing and accessory storage.

Here are some ways to add storage space even if you don’t have room for a traditional custom closet:

Freestanding closet armoires
Clothing racks and under-bed storage
A closet system outside of the bedroom
Space-maximizing tricks

Let’s get started, and I’ll show you how to manage your wardrobe without the space for a full custom closet system.

Freestanding Closet Armoires

At Hartville Custom Closets and Garage, we have plenty of experience creating freestanding wardrobes, also called closet armoires. These include space for hanging clothes, folded clothes, and some accessories. Closet armoires are excellent for smaller spaces and bedrooms without a built-in closet.

Just like our regular closet systems, these are custom-made. One of my designers will come to your home to take measurements, look at what you need to store, and create a design. The process is similar to how we design any other type of closet or storage space. On installation day, we’ll put your system together and show you how everything works; you’ll love having the space you need to store your belongings even without the benefit of a closet.

Clothing Racks and Under-Bed Storage

Of course, you can use the space you already have in the room. Under-bed storage bins are popular; I’ve seen these used to store items, like jeans, sweaters, and t-shirts. Anything that can be folded can generally be stored under your bed. Just be sure the bins have tops to keep your items dust-free.

Clothing racks are another good option. You can put one in the corner of a room to add space for hanging clothes. They often come on wheels, so you can move them as needed within your room or even from room to room. This type of storage option offers a ton of versatility, which is good if you’re renting or if you otherwise don’t want to make permanent changes to your home.

A Closet System Outside of the Bedroom

One rule I live by is to always think outside the box… or in this case, outside the bedroom. There’s no law that says you have to store your clothing in your room. If you have extra space, say in a spare bedroom, a nook in the dining room, or in your home office, I can optimize that space for you to allow you to store your clothes.

No room is too big or too small; my designers and installers are adept at maximizing the storage potential just about anywhere. It might seem strange to you to think of keeping your clothes in a living room closet or in an alcove off of a hallway, but it’s something you’ll embrace if it means having the dedicated space you need to store all of your belongings without cluttering up your bedroom.

Space-Maximizing Tricks

In addition to adding storage space as discussed above, I have some great tips for you that will help you make the most of the space you do have. Check these out:

Declutter your bedroom . Chances are good you have a fair amount of space that’s being taken up by items you don’t even use. Homes and Gardens has some good advice for clearing out a bedroom.
Consider dual-purpose furniture . Some beds come with drawers underneath to make under-bed storage easier, and your nightstands might have shelves and drawers you can use for storage. You might also consider putting a hope chest at the foot of your bed to add visual appeal and also storage space for sweaters or blankets.
Use vertical space . Some items, like purses, scarves, and jackets, will do well hanging on hooks. You might install these on the back of your bedroom door or even on your wall.
Regular maintenance . Keeping your bedroom organized by going through your items frequently as well as vacuuming, throwing out any garbage, and tidying up will keep your belongings in good condition and looking neat and clean.

When they return home in May or June, it will be simple enough to arrange for enough hanging and storage space for their clothes, and you can move your items to the upper shelf or to bins stacked on the floor.

Use Space-Saving Solutions

The more space you can use effectively, the less rearranging you’ll need to do when your son or daughter is home for the holidays and the summer. Consider using slimline hangers, hooks on the closet walls, and perhaps hanging shoe organizers. This allows you to store items without impinging much on the space they’ll need when they come back.

You also might want to consider storage solutions outside of the closet itself. Under-the-bed bins are a great choice for storing sweaters, your child’s extra blankets, and other items that aren’t being used right now. If closet space is really lacking, you might even consider installing a closet armoire.

Invest in Durable Materials

Remember that although your child’s college journey won’t last more than a handful of years, you’ll be using this closet space for as long as you reside in the home. Don’t go to the home improvement store and purchase the cheapest wire closet components you can find. Warped, broken, or crooked closet features won’t be doing anyone any favors.

Instead, consider wood closet system components with high-quality organizers and accessories. You’ll want smooth-rolling drawers and thick, sturdy shelves. Hanging rods should be strong enough to accommodate a full wardrobe, and shoe organizers shouldn’t need constant readjustment.

Finally, while you probably won't be spending a ton of time in your child’s bedroom, you will want to be sure you’re in there frequently enough to keep everything organized. You wouldn’t want your student to return home for an impromptu weekend only to find his or her closet overflowing with random items you threw in there because you had no other place to put them.

Be intentional about what you’re storing in the closet, and once you have everything situated the way you want it, follow the one-in-one-out rule. As A to Zen Life explains, getting rid of one item every time you bring in a new one will keep clutter from taking over. Even though you have the extra space now, don’t use that as a reason to go on a shopping spree or to start a collection of items that will sit in the closet. Keep it neat and tidy.

Speaking of off-season items, you must have a storage solution in mind for them. Building a bigger closet space with a custom solution doesn’t mean it’s wise to store all four seasons’ worth of clothes, shoes, and linens in one space.

You’re only making more work for yourself in finding the items you need and creating unnecessary clutter in your closet.

You can store off-season items in your closet, just not on clothing racks. Use the vacuum sealing method above and then organize the items on spare shelves, using dividers to keep everything neat.

What if you don’t have any closet space left? Use storage containers and keep the items elsewhere, perhaps under your bed or in another part of the house.

7. Store Shoes on a Rack

Shoe clutter can make your closet seem five times smaller as your favorite shoes erase any available floor space. You could damage your shoes by piling them up like that, and you’ll also add extra time to your morning routine if you don’t pair your footwear together.

A shoe rack is a game-changer. Your shoes will be organized against one wall of your custom closet, opening up the floor for walking around. You can spare your shoes from dust, damage, and crushing.

You’ll also appreciate how easy it is to find your shoes in the morning so you can be out the door without consequence.

Other great options for organizing shoe clutter are shoe fences or cubbies.

8. Add Wardrobes or Clothing Racks

A bustling wardrobe might not be containable, even in a custom closet. Rather than trying to force your clothes here, there, and everywhere until they’re bursting at the seams, consider external organization solutions instead.

For example, clothing racks stored in the closet or outside of it give you more open space for hanging your favorite garments. You could also consider an external clothing armoire or wardrobe.

These solutions can also work for off-season clothing storage if you have no space for plastic tote buckets.

9. Rely on Jewelry Trays

Disorganized jewelry is a major stressor, as these precious pieces are meaningful. Store them somewhere special, such as jewelry trays within your custom closet. Jewelry organizers can keep earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

You’ll know just where to find your favorite piece for accessorizing your outfit, and you won’t have to worry about the chains becoming hopelessly tangled.

10. Consider an Island

A countertop or center island in your custom closet is another solution for expanding space. This high-end solution works best in bedroom walk-in closets. The island adds a luxe appeal to your closet and should have shelving or cubbies for keeping more items.

You can opt for hidden storage if you want the island to shine or let the storage solutions show. You might ask for built-in seating, like benches, so you can try on outfits and put your shoes on in the morning, all from your closet.
